Girls In Uniform

Jeremiah Tash READ TIME: 1 MIN.

The seminal lesbian-themed film Madchen in Uniform, originally made in 1931, has been remake in 1958 and is finally distributed by Wolfe films.

The film, starring Manuela (Romy Schneider), as the newly orphaned girl who's new life in an all girls school takes an erotic turn when she meets, and becomes infatuated with, her teacher (Lilli Palmer). The film, directed by Hungarian Geza Von Radvanyi, isn't flashy or soap-operatic, and the emotions felt by Manuela are empathetic, making it a legitimate film that discussed lesbianism in a non-fetishized manner.

Not only was this film about lesbian girls made in 1958, but it contains no smooth saxophone tones or suggestive angle-shots. The feel of the film is almost comparable to a Disney movie. Madchen may not be for everyone, considering it's in a foreign language, but you have to at least give thought to a German movie about homosexual crushes and wonder how they managed to pioneer that genre.
