Fantasia & Fantasia 2000: 2-Movie Collection Special Edition

Kevin Taft READ TIME: 2 MIN.

The magic of animation and classical music comes to vivid life with the release of Disney's original Fantasia and the 10 year old upgrade, Fantasia 2000. Astoundingly clear and colorful, the two movies have been magnificently restored in picture and sound quality making for a dazzling looking Blu-ray that will make any Disney fan drool.

Both movies have restored picture and a soundtrack remastered into 7.1 Digital Theatre System Hi-Def Surround Sound.

The best part of the discs is the Blu-ray extras which include not only audio commentaries, but original documentaries as well. A tour of the Disney Family Museum in San Francisco's Presidio Park will have every Disney junkie booking a flight to Northern California. There are also interactive Art Galleries and Screensavers, a featurette on Musicana which was to be the original follow-up to Fantasia, as well as the short film Destino that was a collaboration between Walt Disney and Salvador Dali. An 82 minute documentary is included that looks at the relationship between the two men and how the short came to fruition.

But a short doc on The Shultheis Notebook is the most compelling. Discovered in a warehouse, the notebook was an incredibly in-depth journal of the special effects processes used in the making of Fantasia. Dubbed the Rosetta Stone of Special Effects Animation, it is an amazing look into how certain sequences in the film were achieved, many not by the standard hand drawings usually utilized in traditional animation.

Fantasia & Fantasia 2000 come in a 4-disc Blu-ray/DVD combo pack with both Blu-ray and DVD versions of both films. Suggested retail price is $45.99.
