Arthur/Arthur 2 On The Rocks

Jim Halterman READ TIME: 1 MIN.

I hadn't watched the original Arthur movies in probably 20 years before sitting down to review the original and the sequel starring Dudley Moore and Liza Minnelli but the time is right to check out the story of Arthur again as the remake is about to hit theaters with Russell Brand, Helen Mirren and Jennifer Garner.

In case you need a refresher, Arthur (Moore) is an irresponsible drunk playboy with his closest relationship being with his acid-tongued butler, played by John Gielgud, who won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role. Arthur has been set up in an arranged marriage with a woman he doesn't love but it will secure his fortune. He's fine with that until he meets Queens waitress Linda (Minnelli) and falls for her. Will Arthur give up his fortune for true love?

As good as the first movie is, however, Arthur 2: On the Rocks, is a lame attempt at trying to keep the success of the franchise going. In the sequel, Arthur's inheritance is in jeopardy and the playboy must try to clean up his act (including get sober) and take care of his now-wife (again, played by Minnelli). The movie is sadly missing most of the sharp, endearing wit of the first movie.

The double Blu-ray release is still worth getting despite the sequel's failures since the price is right (under $20) and the first movie is so wonderful. While there are no extras in the release, it's a great film to revisit before checking out the remake.
