Fans Urge Disney to Make Elsa Gay in 'Frozen' Sequel

Fans are taking to social media, urging Disney to make Elsa, the lead character from the wildly popular animated movie "Frozen," gay for the upcoming sequel, the A.V. Club reports.

In March, Disney revealed a sequel for "Frozen" was under way and since then, LGBTQ fans of the movie have been clamoring online for officials from the Mouse House to give Elsa a female love interest. This may not be too surprising to some, as many believe the animated movie has parallels to the LGBTQ community and that the hit song from "Frozen," "Let It Go," is about coming out.

Using the hashtag #GiveElsaAGirlfriend, fans have tweeted about the importance of making Elsa gay. The A.V. Club notes the hashtag became a trending topic on Monday.

The hashtag was started by Alexis Isabel, 17, who wrote an essay for MTV, explaining the importance of an LGBTQ Disney Princess.

"The entertainment industry has given us girls who have fallen in love with beasts, ogres who fall for humans, and even grown women who love bees. But we've never been able to see the purity in a queer relationship," Isabel wrote.

The A.V. Club points out there has also been a counter-movement, with some Twitter users trying to make the hashtag #GiveElsaABoyfriend a thing. Shocker.
