Ice Road Truckers - The Complete Season Three

Jim Halterman READ TIME: 2 MIN.

On paper, a reality series about a group of truckers driving on an icy highway in Alaska doesn't sound like the kind of television that would have you on the edge of your seat, right? Wrong! In watching the third season of The History Channel's Ice Road Truckers, newly available on DVD, one cannot help but get caught up in the adrenaline involved in this series.

Every winter, truckers have less than three months to drive their trucks filled with supplies along 400 miles that make up the ice-covered, mountain terrain known as the Dalton Highway that connects Fairbanks to the Prudhoe Bay oil fields. The supplies needed to keep the fields running are vital to the drivers delivering them safely and timely. Of course, a few avalanches and high Arctic winds making visibility impossible come into play, which adds to the drama and adventure of the series.

The thirteen episodes in the third season of Ice Road Truckers does more than merely document the journeys of veteran drivers Hugh Rowland and Alex Deborgorski as well as new drivers, including the first female trucker. Not only does the show allow the audience to get to know the drivers but the competitiveness between them is also a large (and fun) part of the show as they try to get their loads in on time and, also, have the largest number of loads.

The third season DVD presents all thirteen episodes on four discs along with additional footage of the terrain and driving adventures. The extras show some impressive footage but there is more than enough spectacular footage in a regular episode of this series, created by Thom Beers, who also helped create such reality hits as Deadliest Catch.

Overall, Ice Road Truckers may not initially sound like something that would produce a thrill but do yourself a favor and throw that notion out the window and gear up for an exciting ride with some of the most courageous men and women out there.
