"Californication" hasn’t changed in five seasons. The popular Showtime series keeps trying to stay fresh but it’s pretty formulaic. Each scene seems to start with someone walking in on someone else in flagrante delicto. Awkwardness ensues and then the scene starts.

By the fifth season, the constant need for shock value seems cheap. Hank Moody (David Duchovny) is still misanthropic and sex-addicted. He still holds a torch for his old flame Karen (Natascha McElhone) and wants the best for daughter Becca (Madeleine Martin).

To add flavor to Season 5, Hank agrees to write the biography for hip-hop star Samurai Apocalypse (RZA). But of course, he manages to inadvertently sleep with his main squeeze Kali (Meagan Good). Ultimately, it comes off as a little cheap and stereotypical to introduce the world of hip-hop and have the characters be criminal.

There are no special features on the DVD save for Showtime’s insistence on including episodes of their other series. Included on the discs are episode 1 and 2 of "House of Lies." It’s a decent series but does suffer from excessive advertising. Two episodes of "The Borgias" and "Dexter" are available for streaming online but only if you have a PC.

It’s a pity that there are no special features because the series seems fun to make despite being a little lackluster to watch. The characters are likeable but nothing really notable happens. It seems more self-indulgent than anything.

If you’ve enjoyed the first four seasons of "Californication" don’t miss the fifth season. However, it does not take the series to new heights in creativity or entertainment.
