Stan Helsing by Christian Cintron
EDGE ContributorSaturday Nov 14, 2009 Stan Helsing has all the makings of a good movie. The premise is interesting: a long-lost descendant of Van Helsing, named Stan Helsing, is a down-on-his-luck video store clerk. While en route to a Halloween party, he encounters scary situations and monsters.
The cast includes decent actors Kennan Thompson (SNL) and Reba cutie Steve Howey as Stan. However, the film is yet another attempt at squeezing blood from the Scary Movie stone. For some reason, everyone who has worked on the original Wayans Brothers’ hit thinks they can make a parody film.
The film features spoofs of all the major horror characters. Hellraiser’s Pinhead has swizzle sticks in his face, Freddy Krueger is dressed like Flavor Flav, and Chucky from Child’s Play is a perverted gay toy. This does not make the movie work. Instead, the laughs feel forced.
The plot, unlike the creative premise, is that Thompson and Howey travel to a Halloween party with their respective love interests. Along the way, they go from one scary movie scenario to another.
The acting is decent, but not enough to carry this unremarkable movie. Newcomer Desi Lydic shines as the idiotic, slutty Mia. Thompson and Howey do get some funny moments, and are likable enough to be the leads in a movie. There is also an appearance by Leslie Neilsen as a waitress at a truck stop. This film cements his placement on the list of Culturally Irrelevant Celebrities.
The DVD includes extended scenes including a hilarious puppet-gangbang scene featuring the Chucky doll. There is also an unremarkable gag reel and a making-of featurette that goes into a lot of unnecessary detail.
Stan Helsing is ultimately a stoner comedy that is not super hilarious but might suit a lame Halloween at home.
