"Hotel Transylvania" offers up an interesting premise with Dracula running a hotel for monsters to escape from humans. For the Blu-ray combo pack, the decision was made to take a more straightforward approach that is highly technical at times rather than keeping the special features in the film’s comedic vein.
This set is jam packed with extras including a filmmakers’ commentary, deleted scenes, multiple making-of featurettes, a music video and an animated short.
The filmmakers’ commentary centers on technical talk and tends to dwell on the problems that occurred, losing some magic along the way. Included in the deleted scenes are: one cut during development before being animated, and other fully animated cuts made prior to the final locked film. This gives you a full view of the filmmaking process.
"Goodnight Mr. Foot," is an entertaining short involving Bigfoot coming to stay at the hotel to get a good night’s sleep. What’s interesting is that the short is hand drawn instead of being computer generated as the film is.
Forgoing the traditional behind-the-scenes route, the filmmakers’ create multiple short features. The first introduces the vocal cast, though there are almost no interviews with them. Most interesting among these is "Progression Reels," which tells how to make characters’ motions seamless to viewers.
"Hotel Transylvania" is as close to a full special features package as you could expect from a Blu-ray. The only downside to the package is that the vibe of the film isn’t evident in the extras.
