Mike and Sully are back in rare form this week, as they take Blu-ray 3D by storm. Titled "The Ultimate Collector’s Edition," this 5-disc set introduces fab fun for those of you who have 3D televisions. For those who haven’t enjoyed the film on Blu-ray before (other versions hit the streets in 2009), this decade-old Pixar classic might feel a wee bit dated animation-wise, but the digital transfer process is impeccable.
It’s also a good warm-up to the upcoming prequel "Monsters University" - although, frankly, if you really want to guffaw, take a peek at the Monsters University website. You’ve got the 3D version - which is amazing, particularly in sequences such as the door storage chase and snowy exile - but the regular Blu-ray is enjoyable as well. The film is a popular favorite, both inventive and funny; and it was groundbreaking in 2001.
Newer fun in the set includes "Mike’s New Car" - a hysterical short film - along with "Partysaurus Rex," which, frankly, gave me shivers thanks to the fact that my 10-month-old daughter’s bathtub toy collection looks eerily similar to the animated version. Roz’s 100 Door Challenge Game is a wonky trivia game (with some very challenging questions - remember, when you’re told to find Sully, just hit enter). Some of the audio commentary is fascinating; I enjoyed hearing insider chat, particularly on shorts such as "For the Birds." The Filmmakers’ Round Table was a bit flat, but that’s the only dud on an otherwise fun-filled set.
If you don’t have a 3D player/HD set, you can always opt for the set without the 3D disc, which’ll save you a whopping $7 or so.
