A man’s best friend is his imaginary dog and in the Blu-ray release of "Wilfred: The Complete First Season", one can see why this twist on the old story of man vs. dog was the surprise hit of last year’s TV season.

This Americanized remake of an Australian sitcom by the same name stars the lovable Elijah Wood. His character is introduced in the pilot episode as Ryan, a suicidal and neurotic head case. His neighbor Jenna (Fiona Gubelmann) asks Ryan to dog-sit but inexplicably, Wilfred (the uproarious Jason Gann) is a man dressed in a dog costume, with droopy ears and plastic nose to match. Gann played the role in the Australian show as well and serves as co-creator of this version.

Wilfred is a pot-smoking, foul-mouthed alcoholic that only Ryan can see. The charm of the show is that every other character sees Wilfred as a normal dog. These 13 episodes on 2 discs are the most original and daring this viewer has seen in years. Wood plays the straight man to perfection, and Gann is the consummate foil.

The deleted scenes shown as part of the special features are an extension of the outrageousness of the show, probably deemed too extreme even for the FX channel. "Wilfred and Bear: A Love Affair", "Wilfred at Comic-Con 2011", and "Life After Film School with Jason Gann" are all worth a look, while "Mary Jane Mash-up" should be skipped. "Wilfred" has recently started its second season.
