Cincinnati native Sydney Morton stars in "Flashdance - the Musical," the stage adaptation of the 1983 hit film, which is coming to the Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC) from March 25 - 30, 2014.

"Flashdance - The Musical" tells the story of Alex Owens, a Pittsburgh steel mill welder by day and a bar dancer by night with dreams of one day becoming a professional performer. When romance with her steel mill boss threatens to complicate her ambitions, Alex learns the meaning of love and its power to fuel the pursuit of her dream.

Joining Morton as Alex and Corey Mach as Nick are Alison Ewing as Tess, Ginna Claire Mason as Gloria, DeQuina Moore as Kiki, Madeline Doherty as Hannah, David R. Gordon as Jimmy, Steve Greenstein as Harry and Christian Whelan in the role of C.C.

Morton has appeared in many Broadway productions including "Motown," "Memphis" and "Evita." More recently, she played a nun in the NBC’s live broadcast of "The Sound of Music." Morton has a lot of affection for "Flashdance" and jumped at the chance to be in the musical.

"It’s a challenging show," Morton told EDGE. "There’s a lot of energy to it and (the cast) has to build our stamina to be able to approach our roles."

"She’s a very eclectic, strong tomboy-type character," Morton says of Alex. "The movie is iconic. This is one of the movies I watched a lot growing up and roles like this don’t really come along very often where you get to be a triple-threat and dance as hard as you sing, as hard as you act, and tell a story using every skill."

"Flashdance - The Musical" features a score including the hit songs from the movie, including the Academy Award-winning title song "Flashdance - What a Feeling," "Maniac," and "Gloria."

In addition to these hits, 16 brand new songs have been written for the stage with music by Robbie Roth and lyrics by Robert Cary and Robbie Roth.

Directed and choreographed by Sergio Trujillo ("Jersey Boys,’ "Memphis," "The Addams Family)", "Flashdance" features a book by Robert Cary and Tom Hedley (co-writer of the original screenplay with Joe Eszterhas).

"Flashdance" appeals to people who want to make their dreams come true, whether its being a professional dancer or some other goal, Morton explained.

"I think everyone will come away wanting to dance," Morton said. "It’s a fairy tale and it’s like a Cinderella story because the odds are against Alex getting her dream."

Morton has wanted to be a performer from a very young age. Now she is getting the chance to live her dream.

"This is how I have imagined my life," Morton said. "Being in front of an audience is exhilarating but it also feels like home."

"Flashdance - the Musical" runs March 25 - 30, 2014 at the Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC), (220 Weybosset Street, Providence, RI. For more information, visit the PPAC website.
