We’re out and about as usual, honoring gay icon and stage veteran Betty Buckley, actor Campbell Scott and 8 other "musts" this week. Want to know what’s hot? Here’s the Hit List:

BETTY BUCKLEY

You’re seriously at risk of losing your gay card if you don’t check out Broadway’s leading lady, Betty Buckley, during her weekend pit stop in Boston. In addition to her award-winning stage, film and television credits, the diva has enjoyed a successful career over the past two decades as a cabaret and concert performer. 6:30-9:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7. Cambridge Center for Adult Education, 56 Brattle St. $150. 617-547-6789. 7:30 p.m. & 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8. Regattabar, Charles Hotel, One Bennett St. 617-395-7757 or www.regattabarjazz.com

’THE ATHIEST’

"Longtime Companion" and "Dying Young" actor Campbell Scott is Augustine Early, a crooked journalist who has made an art out of clawing his way up the professional ladder. When he turns the Mayor’s tawdry predilections into front page news, the scandal threatens to blow up in his face. 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12 until Sunday, Sept. 30. Huntington Theatre Company’s Wimberly Theatre, 527 Tremont St. $50. 617-266-0800 or www.huntingtontheatre.org

MEN OF MYSTERY

Mystery authors Anthony Bidulka, Neil Plakcy, Chuck Zito and Mark Richard Zubro--four of the best practitioners of the gay mystery genre--join forces to talk about their new books, their handsome, sexy heroes and the future of the gay mystery. 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7. Free. Calamus Bookstore, 92B South St. Free. 617-338-1931 or www.calamusbooks.com

’THE ENGLISH CHANNEL’

The year is 1593. The plague has closed the Elizabethan playhouses and William Shakespeare is taking refuge in the Mermaid Tavern, writing sonnets. The soon-to-be iconic playwright is tangled up in sexual, artistic and political intrigue with other young Elizabethan men and women. 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6 until Saturday, Sept. 15. C. Walsh Theatre, Suffolk University, 55 Temple St. $15-$30. 866-811-4111 or www.theatermania.com

’DRAG KING IDOL 2’

All The Kings Men come out and play as the women of New England stuff their shorts and dabble in some gender-fuck fun. Perform as male or female or anything in between. All gender representations are welcome. 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8. Machine, 1254 Boylston St. $15. www.atkm.com

ALAN ALDA

Actor Alan Alda of "M*A*S*H" fame is coming to town in conjunction with the release of his latest memoir, "Things I Overheard While Talking to Myself" (Random House), in which he ponders the meaning of his life, which was almost ended after an intestinal obstruction in 2003. 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10. John F. Kennedy Library, Columbia Point. 617-514-1643 or www.jfklibrary.org

’DARFUR/DARFUR’

ICA/Boston presents an awareness-raising day of larger-than-life images of the conflict in Sudan’s Darfur region. The images, by some of the most important photojournalists working today, will be projected on large screens as part of the unique traveling exhibit, "Darfur/Darfur." The finale will include a performance by internationally renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma. 10 a.m.-8:30 p.m. ICA’s Barbara Lee Foundation Center, 100 Northern Ave. 617-478-3100 or www.icaboston.org

’THE PHOENICIAN WOMEN’

On their way to start their new life at Delphi, six women are trapped in a foreign country that’s about to be invaded. Caught between the two sons of Oedipus as they battle for their father’s throne, the women bear witness to the devastating effects of war. 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6 until Saturday, Sept. 8. American Repertory Theatre, Loeb Experimental Theatre, 64 Loeb St. Havard Square, Cambridge. $5-$10. 617-547-8300 or www.amrep.org

’HATCHET’

Writer-director and Holliston native, Adam Green, unleashes his independent-film monster to the masses on Friday, Sept. 7. "Hatchet" pays homage to the classic horror slasher flicks of the ’70s and ’80s where plain folk find themselves in mysterious fog and mortal danger.

’TIM GUNN’S GUIDE TO STYLE’

Now that "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" has officially been cancelled, Bravo’s sartorially-inclined consigliere from "Project Runway" has been cast as a makeover guru in "Tim Gunn’s Guide To Style," debuting on Bravo at 10 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6.
