Fasten your seatbelts: Pam Ann lands in the USA! by Steve Weinstein
EDGE Editor-In-ChiefFriday Oct 9, 2009
If you’ve ever taken a plane trip, been subjected to airport security, starved on a long flight or had an interaction with a nasty flight attendant--or, more likely, a nasty fellow passenger--get on board as Pam Ann takes flight starting in Boston Saturday, October 10. Her Boston show marks the first stop on her break-out North American tour that takes her to ten other cities (there’s a full listing and dates below).
Having played small clubs in the past, she is looking forward to conquering this country with her gayer-than-gay-act. Already large audiences have guffawed at her antics in her native Australia; as well as in her adopted country, Britain, and Germany, where she’s regarded as a superstar.
Funniest stand-up ever
Having been on two flights, I can testify that this is probably the funniest stand-up I’ve ever experienced. Forget those "don’t you hate mosquitoes?," slice-of-life brick-wall comics. Pam Ann’s humor is raunchy, with a totally gay sensibility.
Wikipedia notes her popularity, "particularly in gay venues such as 2 Brewers in South London, playing alongside some of the UKs most critically respected drag performers. These routines rely heavily on audience participation and her very sharp tongue."
That’s putting it mildly. Terrorism, the Mile High Club, personal drug smuggling (and ingesting), nasty stewardesses, the differences among international airlines’ personnel (the reason for her adoration among flight crews and other airline employees, to whom she’s a cult figure) ... these are only some of the subjects Pam Ann touches down on in her act.
A recent visit to Vancouver brought this response from a critic Glen Callender from the website UQ Events: "In sum, if you are a frequent flyer, drag aficionado, or airline staff, Pam Ann delivers all the in-flight ribbing you could ever ask for, plus the requisite camp glamour, catty put-downs, and dirty jokes one expects from a sassy bitch in a wig and too much make-up. And it’s endlessly fun to watch her revel in sucking her audience down into her vacuum-flush airline toilet of shameless filth-after a particularly ribald joke about multiple blowjobs and herpes, she neutralized a homo heckler by quipping, ’Gays, you created me. You created this monster. It’s all your fault.’"
