GLAAD Calls on Tucker Carlson, MSNBC to Apologize

Thursday Aug 30, 2007

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) today called on Tucker Carlson, NBC News and MSNBC to apologize for remarks made on Tuesday night that appear to condone violent assault.

On the Tuesday, Aug. 28 edition of "MSNBC Live with Dan Abrams" MSNBC host Tucker Carlson referenced an incident from his past when he was the recipient of an unwanted advance from another man. Carlson told program host (and MSNBC General Manager) Dan Abrams and fellow MSNBC host Joe Scarborough that after being "bothered" by a man in a restroom in a Washington, D.C., mall, Carlson returned "with someone [he] knew and grabbed the guy... and hit him against the stall with his head, actually. And then the cops came and arrested him." Abrams and Scarborough are seen chuckling throughout Carlson’s telling of the story.

Earlier today, GLAAD called Abrams’ office to discuss NBC News and MSNBC’s response to Carlson’s behavior. Abrams’ office responded with an e-mailed statement attributed to Carlson, which read:

Let me be clear about an incident I referred to on MSNBC last night: In the mid-1980s, while I was a high school student, a man physically grabbed me in a men’s room in Washington, DC. I yelled, pulled away from him and ran out of the room. Twenty-five minutes later, a friend of mine and I returned to the men’s room. The man was still there, presumably waiting to do to someone else what he had done to me. My friend and I seized the man and held him until a security guard arrived.

Several bloggers have characterized this is a sort of gay bashing. That’s absurd, and an insult to anybody who has fought back against an unsolicited sexual attack. I wasn’t angry with the man because he was gay. I was angry because he assaulted me.

The statement is not only a failed attempt to justify Carlson’s advocacy of violence, but also changes key details of the previous night’s on-air story. First, Carlson does not repeat his assertion that he "hit him against the stall with his head," instead changing his story to say that he "seized the man and held him down until a security guard arrived." The security guard element is also newly invented. In his on-air statement, Carlson said that "the cops came and arrested him."

"Carlson’s story was difficult to watch on two levels," said GLAAD Senior Director of Media Programs Rashad Robinson. "To see someone brag on national television of returning, with an accomplice, to the scene of an unwanted advance to violently attack the person who made it is incredibly disturbing. But it was also hard to watch because of the sheer absurdity of most of what Carlson was saying."

"Whether Abrams and Scarborough were laughing with Carlson or laughing at him, the fact remains that MSNBC and NBC News have some explaining to do about their standards and practices," Robinson said. "They need to explain whether bragging about physically assaulting a man in response to an unwanted advance is appropriate on-air behavior for one of their employees, and whether laughter by two others is an appropriate on-air response."

I think that in the larger picture, what the man who allegedly assaulted Tucker Carlson when he was a teen did and what Larry Craig did by tapping his toe underneath the stall in a public restroom are two wholly different things.

If what Carlson alleges is true, he was indeed assaulted. While I don’t condone violence to solve any problem, his response can be understood as a reaction to a threatening situation. But to equate cruising with assault is a dangerous comparison.

Do NOT apologize Tucker. As a gay man I found nothing wrong with what you said. I do not believe you were encouraging violence, simply telling a story. This is America, we should be the land of the free. If everytime you say something that offends someone you must apologize, then truly we have lost our freedoms. You have commited no crime, broken no law. You have only offended those that have NOTHING to do but sit around and look for ways to be offended. Do NOT apologize Tucker, do NOT. I am not a violent person but I KNOW that if I were to try ’n use the restroom and a straight or gay man were to touch me inapproiately, I’d BEAT HIS ASS...
Make me apoplogize for that GLAAD. Seriouslly, there are far more important issues in this world, let us try to refocus our attention people.

Any man who comes on to Tucker needs to get hit up side the head. I can’t imagine anyone finding that steaming pile of bull funky to be attractive. Hell, his face alone makes me go limp. And don’t even get me started on his dancing skills.

I think that GLADD is actually opening up a can of worms here!
I think that many people fear gays because of the predatory nature of this kind of incident.
This exposes the dark, seedy side of homosexuality - cruising public restrooms, and back alleys - ugh!
They are portraying the degenerate predator as the victim.
I think that Tucker’s actions were typical of a teenage male heterosexual.
I personally experienced a similar situation as a teen, and it makes you feel violated, and angry.
If a gay wants to pick up a date they should go to a gay bar where others are there for the same purpose.
These bathroom cruisers give gays a bad rap - and GLAAD would better serve their followers by condemning those type of activities, rather than seeming to defend them.

gays should recognize that at its core republicans are its ideal party ...limited govt ...stay out of your life ...the abortion question has less relevance +society is more open+ getting even more open ....why not keep more of your hard earned money+ less of government telling you how to live your life

I don’t blame Tucker at all would have done the same thing if anyone grabbed me. As a gay man living in San Francisco (so I by no means am a prude) I find this trolling behavior in Men’s room and the parks disgusting. These closet cases need to come out and quit harrassing/cruising men’s room patrons gay or straight. Why does GLAAD defend this behavior? It’s very embarassing that I had to explain to a female co-worker that this bad behavior does indeed exist - even at our local Macy’s.

This whole "Tucker controversy" depends on what really happened. If a gay guy simply propositioned Tucker, he should have simply told him no and to f-off. But if the guy really assaulted Tucker, then Tucker’s response was justified. Either way it’s NOT a laughing matter, and Tucker, Scarborough, and Abrams ought to know better. Either way, however, this incident shows what a whiny pussy Tucker really is. He had to go get another guy in order to "defend himself". Two against one -- real brave, Tucker!! You pussy!!

14:18 is right. But so is 14:09. The "I need someone else to fight my battles for me" part is also troubling and does make Carlson look like a pussy-wimp.

On the program, Tucker was vague in his description of the unwanted advance and specific in his description of his violent response. No one is asking him to serve time for the actual incident. He is being asked to apologize for his retelling of the event. The message he conveyed, regardless of intention, was that of support of violence against homosexuals.
