Mass. Gov’t Official Allegedly Assaulted Minor in Steam Roomby Kilian MelloyFriday Feb 8, 2008 Democratic Mass. Governor Patrick Deval’s assistant secretary for policy and planning has been charged with sexual battery in connection with an alleged encounter in a resort steam room.
The alleged encounter took place at the $500-per-night Gasparilla Inn & Club in Boca Grande, Fla., between Carl Stanley McGee, 38, and an unnamed 15-year-old boy.
As reported widely in the press, the boy claimed that McGee performed oral sex on him.
The alleged encounter between the Democratic government official and the minor trails a string of similar sex scandals that have dogged the Republican Party in recent months, as the wonkette.com story notes.
In the closing paragraph of the wonkette.com article, the following sentence appears: "In a refreshing twist on the old ’hypocrite gay’ theme, McGee is a Democrat and an actual supporter of gay marriage."
The wonkette.com article also noted that two years ago, McGee and his husband celebrated their wedding in Mass., currently the only state to allow full marriage equality.
The Boston Globe, in a Feb. 7 article, noted that McGee’s marriage to John Finley IV was presided over by former state senator Jarrett Barrios.
The Boston Globe reported in a Feb. 7 story that McGee had been placed on leave without pay. McGee faces arraignment in Fla. next week, the Globe article said.
The Globe article cited police reports that recorded McGee as having been placed under arrest Dec. 28. McGee was held briefly on a bail of $300,000.
According to the Globe, McGee’s colleagues had been told that the assistant secretary was absent from work due to illness, with no word about his arrest being offered.
Once informed of the nature of McGee’s absence, at least one colleague in the state’s government expressed her outright disbelief, saying, "I know it didn’t happen."
The Globe declined to identify the individual, saying she had not received authorization to discuss the case.
The Globe story detailed that the alleged victim had spoken with a man the day before the reported encounter.
After the alleged incident, authorities questioned McGee, who, it was reported, refused to answer questions without a lawyer present. Later on, the alleged victim identified McGee as the man who, he claimed, performed oral sex on him
Among McGee’s other contributions to Patrick’s administration, the Globe reported, were his input into a bill to allow for casinos in the state, biotech measures, and a measure to mandate broadband Internet access statewide.
The Globe also reported that the Harvard law school graduate and Rhodes Scholar had played a crucial role in the defense of marriage equality in Mass., working with the GLBT pro-family organization MassEquality in a directorial capacity dedicated to outreach.
McGee is scheduled to appear in a Florida court for arraignment on Feb. 11.
