Sheena Easton: The Next Big (Miz) Thing?by Kilian MelloyWednesday May 14, 2008 Scottish chanteuse Sheena Easton is looking for her next act, and has settled on the GLBT audience.
The 48-year-old performer and onetime winner of the Best Newcomer Grammy has seen her hits fall away along with her recording contracts, reported a Scottish newspaper.
The story was picked up by Towelroad, which quoted from the Scotsman.com Web site in its report that Easton, who rose to pop prominence in the 1980s and whose worldwide record sales exceed 20 million, is now hoping to become the next big gay thing.
The move seemingly arose partly from a recognition that the gay community still harbors a fondness for Easton’s 80s hits, and has led to Easton signing on to gay cruises as a top-billed entertainer, as well as to plans for her to appear at Pride concerts throughout America.
But however Easton might be received Stateside, in her native land she’s not feeling the love.
The article quoted Glasgay! producer Steven Taylor as saying, "As far as I’m concerned, she is pretty much a washed-up has-been."
Taylor continued, "We have a very young funky audience who, to be frank, are into much cooler acts than Sheena Easton."
Added Taylor, whose Glasgay! event is the largest gay festival I Scotland, "The idea that we would ask her to come back and perform in Glasgow is completely laughable."
Taylor went on, "Gay audiences do love their ageing divas, but I think Sheena Easton is pushing things too far."
Added Taylor, "In Scotland straight and gay audiences both tend not to like people who go away, change their accent and lose complete touch with their roots.
"I’m very sorry, Sheena, but your invitation to come back to Glasgow is not likely to be sent out any time soon," said Taylor.
