The eyes have it

Once upon a time, God created eye cream. And S/He said, "it was good."

But we didn’t.

At least, not good enough. After all, all eyes are not created equal; there isn’t just one "issue" when it comes to the delicate skin around the eyes. The windows to the soul they may be, but our eyes can have crinkles, wrinkles, sags, bags, redness and bedness. So what’s a boy-or girl-to do?

First, take a good long look in a magnifying mirror. (If you’re over 40, mind-altering medication is a suggested prelude to this nasty task.) What’s your primary problem? For some, dark circles are the culprit; indeed, this typically hereditary attribute is the one least tied to age. (You probably saw circles after pulling an all-nighter in college.)

Alternately, you may find wrinkles-and not the "fine" kind the ads like to talk about. (Ours are deep enough to irrigate the Sahara for the next 100 years.) Facial expressions and sun damage can cause absolute furrows, especially on the sides of the eyes; we have sun-worshipping amigos in their early ’30s whose eyes are more lined than those in their late ’40s who’ve taken good care of their skin.

Finally, there’s one woe that befalls everyone over 40: sagging. Thankfully, the past few years have a spate of products designed to firm and tone the sensitive eye area, and the best ones are listed here.

How to choose the best product for your skin? Opt for the ones whose claims best meet your primary issue. Then, if you can afford a second one, find a product to meet that need and apply where your skin needs it most.

Your eyes tell more about you than any other part of your face-and putting your best feature forward is always key. Luckily, modern science has come up with some super-advanced treatments to help you look your youngest and best. The EDGE Grooming Team spent some time testing dozens of products; we’re pleased to present our favorites here.

Azure Cosmeceuticals :: Hydropeptide Eye Extreme Dark Circle Concentrate
You may not want to say the name of this product more than once (even without aforementioned medication), but once you try it, you’ll definitely be hooked. It claims to be a "targeted eye treatment to reduce puffiness and instantly lift," and-against all odds!- we actually found that to be true. We also noticed that it reduced dark circles and redness (as claimed), as well as color irregularity, while gently plumping up fine lines.

Some of the effects were nearly immediate (the slight plumping, better texture, smoother skin), and some took a few months to see (diminished lines, more perfect skin tone), but we found this to be among our very favorite products in terms of promised effects vs. those actually delivered.

Azure Cosmeceuticals’ Hydropeptide Eye Extreme Dark Circle Concentrate (whoo!) is available for about $70 at www.hydropeptide.com

RéVive :: Masques des Yeux
Those of you who are regular readers of the EDGE Grooming section know that we love nearly everything from Révive skincare. Founder Dr. Gregory Bays Brown has apparently made it his life’s goal to develop products that are more than just hype or pretty bottles. Once again he’s succeeded, with the (fabulously chic-sounding) Masques des Yeux.

Calling upon the latest weapon in the skincare arsenal, probiotics, the good doctor has discovered a way to increase cellular respiration and metabolism. The results? "A cooling, soothing effect that ultimately protects, smoothes and rids eyes of puffiness in a way that’s completely natural to the body." As we say in French: chose promise, chose due! (Promise made, promise kept.)

A ’booster product’ to be used in conjunction with your daily regime, Masques des Yeux is applied before bed once or twice a week and left on overnight. While you sleep, it does its work, smoothing, soothing, and helping you look younger, more refreshed, and fabulous when you wake up- and throughout the day!

Available for $145 at Neiman Marcus and www.NeimanMarcus.com
