Plagiarists and Druggies and Thieves, Oh My!
In a statement likening LGBT people to thieves, plagiarists and drug abusers, a cultural analyst for a hard right wing "christian values" group has come down on National Anti-Bullying Awareness Month claiming that the once positive movement has been taken over by homosexual activists, One News Now reports.
Laurie Higgins of the Illinois Family Institute (IFI) told conservative Christian news outlet One News Now that she believes that although the anti-bullying movement started out as something positive, homosexual activists have turned the efforts into something that affirms the homosexual lifestyle.
"They wouldn’t have anyone come into a school; they wouldn’t show films, have skits or activities in which there are theft, plagiarism, promiscuity, substance abuse, kids called names like druggie," said Higgins, further stating "In order to eradicate bullying, you wouldn’t have them come in for fear of affirming those behaviors."
Higgins, whose expertise in education is limited to an eight year stint working in a suburban high school writing center, is IFI’s Cultural Analyst. She is the author of numerous articles and opinion pieces published on the IFI website most of which condemn marriage equality and the LGBT community.
In the One News Now article, Higgins asserts that conservatives and Christians need to be bold in affirming family values.
"Conservatives need to stop feeling they can’t express their moral beliefs out of fear that someone would call them hateful," the grandmother of five said. "That is a strategic means to silence us."
The fear of being called "hateful" apparently hasn’t silenced Higgins. According to the IFI website, Higgins’ cultural commentaries have been carried on a number of pro-family websites nationally and internationally, and she has appeared on numerous radio programs across the country. Additionally, she has spoken at the Council for National Policy and educational conferences sponsored by the Constitutional Coalition.
According to Wikipedia, The Illinois Family Institute was founded by former Illinois State Representative Penny Pullen whom President Ronald Reagan had appointed to the President’s Commission on the HIV Epidemic in 1987. In 2009, the IFI was designated a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
