Bachmann: Supreme Court "Immorality" "Attacked Our Constitution"

Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., said that in their rulings that cleared the way for same-sex marriage in California and deemed unconstitutional the Defense of Marriage Act, Supreme Court justices showed they think they’ve "arisen to the level of God."

Ms. Bachmann is contradicting herself or wrong on several counts: FIRST: She talks about limited government, but then wants the government to tell people who they can or cannot marry. SECOND: She talks about rule of law and democracy, but fails to understand that majority rule or rule by a majority of representatives alone is not democracy. Democracy is majority rule, but with protection for the rights of minorities. While elected legislators are best equipped to rule for a majority, the truth is that courts are best equipped to protect minority rights. THIRD: She fails to recognize that you cannot have equal protection under law as long as the rights of minorities can be denied. FOURTH: She proposes that laws should be based on religious beliefs. That is replacing freedom of religion with a state religion. FIFTH: She talks about protecting religious rights and freedom, but refuses to recognize her religious views and the views of the religious right are not shared by all religious groups - including many Christians. It seems to me she advocates freedom of religion only for those who agree with her.

Why is it that the stupidest, craziest people in this country get the most media attention? Sane, intelligent, rational people with important things to say are completely ignored. When was the last time you saw Noam Chomsky, arguably one of the most brilliant intellectuals in the country, interviewed on national TV? But if you’re a wild-eyed, raving moron, the media can’t get enough of you. Extra points if the wacko is an attractive woman.
