Suspects Facing Robbery, Drugging, Murder Charges in Deaths of Gay Men in New York City

Police are catching up to those responsible for the robbery, drugging and killings of two gay men in New York City.

As reported by the New York Times, police have reportedly appended at least one suspect in the deaths of gay men John Umberger, 33, and Julio Ramirez, 25. Both were killed after leaving bars in Manhattan's Hell's Kitchen neighborhood, and a medical examiner ruled that they died during a "drug-facilitated theft."

Their deaths drew wide attention last spring, and left many LGBTQ people in fear of being targets while out enjoying themselves in safe spaces.

However, investigating police say they believe the robberies were money motivated and the victims were not targeted by bias.

Why? In July, Kathryn Marie Gallagher, a fashion designer who worked with Lady Gaga, Laverne Cox and other high-profile clients, was also killed under similar circumstances.

"As public knowledge of the killings grew, more victims came forward to say they too had been drugged at gay bars in New York, and then robbed and left for dead," NYT reports. "The police department has said it is investigating crimes at both straight and gay bars, and that the victims have been a mix of heterosexual and L.G.B.T.Q. people."

According to investigating officials, several groups might have been involved with the crime.

Documents show that at least 10 people were involved in those robberies, of whom six had been arrested, NYT reports. The others are wanted for questioning.

So far, the only suspect fully identified is Andre Butts, 28, who was charged in June of using Ramirez's credit card to purchase two pairs of shoes for $544.38 mere hours after he passed away.
